10. ONEPOINTFIVE - Aminé

Amine’s self-proclaimed “EP/LP/MIXTAPE/ALBUM” starts off with one of the most heartfelt and introspective rap songs of the year, DR. WHOEVER. From the very first track to the last, Anime shows off his talent in flipping unique instrumentals, balancing slow introspection- like the emotional lyrics of TOGETHER-, and the soft, addicting lyrics of REEL IT IN. Any time of the day, ONEPOINTFIVE is the perfect album to get you in a good mood.

8. ye - Kanye West

Kanye West’s controversial solo album shines through not in its technical abilities, but instead in its ability to create such a prominent atmosphere of tranquility, starting from the haunting samples in I Thought About Killing You to the somber choir and apologetic lyrics of Violent Crimes. However, the biggest standout in this record comes from the amazing verse and grandiose, echoey outro by 070 Shake in Ghost Town. While not the best in its technical aspects, ye will go down as one of the hallmark albums of 2018.

7. DAYTONA - Pusha T

Pusha T cements himself as a hip hop legend for a new generation of listeners with a consistent, confident flow and thoughtful bars throughout the short but sweet 7-song album. Its short length leaves some to be desired, but Push’s amazing rhyme schemes flowing with the Kanye-produced instrumentals, his lyrical ability especially shining on tracks like “If You Know You Know” and the Drake diss “Infared”.

6. ASTROWORLD - Travis Scott

The most culturally moving album of 2018, ASTROWORLD lives up to its enormous expectations with a commercial, yet still trippy and exciting 17-track album by Travis. Starting from the hazy intro of STARGAZING, the album truly feels like a ride through the world’s trippiest theme park. Although some songs like WHO? WHAT! Or HOUSTOUNFORNICATION begin to feel repetitive, the album as a whole truly shows Travis’ ability to create a consistent mood, his trappy voice complimenting the star-studded producers behind the experience of ASTROWORLD.

5. OIL OF EVERY PEARL’S UN-INSIDES - SOPHIE

SOPHIE’s freshman album has already launched her into the next era of pop. From the album cover and title alone, this record isn’t going to be for everyone, but SOPHIE’s outstanding production and composition makes this album a true experience. Tackling concepts like self-doubt, social media, and intimacy in an almost avant-garde manner, SOPHIE’s iconically poppy yet experimental production captures emotions in ways never seen before in pop music. Standout tracks include “Faceshopping”, “Is It Cold In The Water?”, and “Immaterial”.

4. TA13OO - Denzel Curry

Denzel Curry’s lyrical ability sparks emotions in any listener as he tells the grandiose story of TA13OO. Tackling heavy subjects like childhood trauma and relationships flows perfectly into some of the hardest, grimiest production of the year, and his lyrical talent is outstanding throughout any and every mood or topic tackled in this amazing record. Split into three parts, flowy, thoughtful songs like “CASH MANIAC” and “SIRENS” contrast heavy hitters like “SUMO” and “BLACK METAL TERRORIST” perfectly. For lyrical hip hop lovers, TA13OO is a required listen.

3. Veteran - JPEGMAFIA

Veteran is an incredibly difficult album to describe to an average listener. The harsh production is like no other, and it’s incredible how JPEGMAFIA is able to make his violent delivery and uniquely hypnotizing lyrics create an orchestra of chaos and brassiness throughout Veteran. While the record is not for every listener, if you’re an avid hip hop listener and open minded to some of the best production of 2018, Veteran is highly recommended.

2. Some Rap Songs - Earl Sweatshirt

Earl Sweatshirt has returned with one of densest and most lyrically intricate albums of the past decade. Don’t let his trippy delivery and poetic lines scare you off, as the production makes Some Rap Songs a hypnotizing experience, and Sweatshirt’s voice mixed with the sample-filled, lo-fi production brings out a loud sense of nostalgia and darkness. Although the album as a whole flows as a perfect story of emotions and finding yourself, songs like “Shattered Dreams” and “Veins” are perfect for any listener ready to immerse themselves in the world of Earl Sweatshirt.

1.KIDS SEE GHOSTS - KIDS SEE GHOSTS

Kid Cudi and Kanye West might be one of the world’s greatest success stories. After years of mental health torture, feuding, media attention, and each’s emotional experiences with finding peace in their own world, their amazing personal stories merge perfectly in KIDS SEE GHOSTS. While only coming in at 23 minutes long, the album doesn’t let down for a second as Kid Cudi and Kanye West play perfectly off of each other, creating a record where every second sounds like pure emotion and only builds onto the near-ethereal experience. “Reborn” and “Freeee (Ghost Town Pt. 2)” give amazing insight into the peace West and Cudi have found, the whole record only building and building until the perfect, thoughtful closure and homage of “Cudi Montage”. KIDS SEE GHOSTS is an album that is never going to be forgotten.
